Physical activity is crucial because our species did not evolve to stay healthy while die. Only in the last century have humans become sedentary.

The evolutionary processes that led to the way we digest and use food took place during times of intense physical activity hunting, gathering, fighting, fleeing, and traveling.

That means we are physically designed for activity that is more strenuous that that in which most people participate. The benefits of physical activity may include:

–  Increasing fitness level

–  Helping to build and maintain bones, muscles, and joints

–  Building endurance and muscle strength

–  Enhancing flexibility and posture

–  Managing weight

–  Lowering risk of heart disease, colon cancer, and type 2 diabetes

–  Helping to control blood pressure

–  Reducing feelings of depression and anxiety

–  Relieve stress

–  Improving self esteem and feelings of well being

Different types of activity treat different aspects of our well being:

–  Aerobic activities speed heart rate and breathing, even as they improve heart and lung fitness. Examples are brisk walking, jogging, and swimming.

–  Resistance, strength building, and weight bearing activities help build and maintain bones and muscles by strengthening them against the force of gravity. Examples are carrying a child, lifting weights, and walking.

–  Balance and stretching activities enhance physical stability and flexibility, which reduces the risk of injuries. Examples are gentle stretching, dancing, yoga, martial arts, and t’ai chi.
