For many women, yeast infections are a recurrent problem. Vaginal yeast infection are one of the most common of all gynecological problems and, although they are not serious, they can be very uncomfortable. Yeast infections are also very persistent and, in many cases, difficult to treat .

Why are  yeast infections so common? The vagina is warm and moist, making it the perfect environment for many lively microorganisms. One class of these microorganisms is yeast and, although there are hundreds of different kinds of yeast, the one that causes more than 90 percent pf the cases of fungal vaginitis is Candida Albicans.

There is a delicate balance between Ph, glycogen, glucose, carbohydrates, and hormones in the vagina. When the balance is thrown off it gives yeast microbes an opportunity to flourish. Some of the events that can trigger those imbalances include use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, poor nutrition, stress, and illness.

Why do antibiotics breed yeast infections? Antibiotics which are important infection fighters, cannot tell the difference between the good and the bad organisms. Thus, antibiotics encourage yeast growth primarily by killing off the good with the bad, giving existing Candida albicans organisms and opportunity to reproduce and colonize.

Women who use oral contraceptives are significantly more likely to suffer from yeast infections than nonusers. The pill causes hormonal changes that alter the acid balance in the vagina, thus allowing the troublesome yeast to multiply. For the same reason, yeast infections are also more common during pregnancy.

Under normal conditions, we have a strong natural immunity to fungal disease such as candida. Healthy, well nourished adults with well functioning immune systems have an innate ability to rid themselves of opportunistic microorganisms like candida. Anything that impairs the immune system, like chemotherapy, excessive stress, and illness, gives yeast an opportunity to flourish. Fortunately, there are several supplements that can bolster our resistance against yeast infection.
