Scoliosis is lateral curvature of the spine, meaning that the spine curves to the left or right of the midpoint on the back. Just about everyone has some lateral curves in their spines, but the term scoliosis is not applied until there is at least ten degrees of curvature or better .

In fact, twenty degrees of curvature is not uncommon. One in every ten people has scoliosis, two in every thousand will need to be monitored and treated and one in every thousand will need scoliosis surgery. Scoliosis is considered a serious problem when the curve reaches thirty degrees or more because of the effects such a curve has on the person’s organs.

Two popular scoliosis treatments are bracing and surgery. If the back brace does not improve the condition, the standart protocol is to perform a fusion of several vertebrae of the spine. The fusion surgery usually corrects the curve by more than half, but in the precess leaves the person unable to bend the back in the area of the fusion. Typical fusion surgeries occur from 3 or 4 down to lumbar 3 or 4, a significant part of the back.

The most common form of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, literally meaning curvature of unknown origin. This form constitutes 80 percent of the scoliosis cases diagnosed every year, and the vast majority of these are adolescent and preadolescence girls.
