While much habs been said and written lately about the difficulty of growing up female, growing up male isn’t exactly easy aether. There are inevitable pressures from parents, peers, and society to look, act, or be a certain way.

There can be a lot of self inflicted pressure, too. Many guys have unusually high expectations of themselves and suffer when they fall short in some area or another.

We will be addressing self esteem and other emotional issues, but just want to emphasize here that becoming a man is a journey unique, in many ways, to each individual.

Many man are take charge, aggressive, strong, and tough, many equally masculine men are more low key, gentle, and content to follow. Ideally, a man will have access to his full range of skills and feelings, expressing quit, tender feelings as well as being decisive and assertive when necessary.

It is important to know, too, that healthy, masculine bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Taking good care of yourself, getting enough rest, good nutrition, and sufficient exercise, avoiding harmful habits such as smoking and drug use, doing monthly testicular self exams, and seeing your physician for regular checkups can help you get and stay in top form physically.

You don’t have to be a Jock to be a real man. You don’t have to be a lider or a sexual superman or dress or talk a certain way to be a real man. You are a real man just as you are, confident sometimes, scared sometimes, as likely to be shy and gentle as tough and assertive, straight or gay, athletic or not, tall or short.

Being a real man comes down to just being you.
