Ginkgo Extract and Symptoms of Aging

Ginkgo biloba extracthas demonstrated remarkably beneficial effects in improving many symptoms associated with aging. The total extract is more active than single isolated components. Ginkgo biloba extract’s primary medical use has been in the treatment of decreased blood flow to the brain and extremities.

In over fifty double-blind clinical trials both patients with chronic insufficiency of blood and oxygen to the brain and patients with reduced blood flow to the ectremities have responded favorably to Ginkgo biloba extract.

The studies have demonstrated Ginkgo biloba extract exerts an extraordinary array of beneficial effects. Symptoms of decreased blood supply to the brain (cerebrovascular insufficiency) include short-term memory loss, impaired mental performance, dizziness, headache, ringing in the ears, lack of vigilance and depression.

Over forty double-blind controlled studies with Ginkgo biloba extract have shown it to be extremely effective in improving the symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency. The quality of research demonstrating this effectiveness is comparable to the quality of research on Hydergine, an FDA-approved drug used in the treatment of cerebrovascular insufficiency and Alzheimer’s disease.

Eight studies stand out as extremely well designed. Because Ginkgo biloba extract increases brain blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain,it offers significant protection against strokes and aids in recovery from a stroke.

Ginkgo biloba extract also increases the rate at which information is transmitted at the nerve cell level. Since memory is dependent upon the transmission of the nerve signal, this mechanism may play a key role in the memory-enhancing effects of GInkgo biloba extract.
