Cyclosporine and Immune System

Cyclosporine suppresses your immune system and prevents rejection of transplanted organs. This very powerful drug is also sometimes used to treat other serious conditions, including aplastic anemia, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and severe psoriasis.

Cyclosporine has several serious side effects and interacts adversely with a number of drugs. Be certain to tell your doctor about any other prescription and non prescription drugs and dietary supplements you take. Cyclosporine is usually used along with corticosteroid drugs such as prednisone.

A Substance in grapefruit or grapefruit juice may reduce the rate of elimination of cyclosporine. This can increase the amount of cyclosporine in your body to dangerous levels. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice when taking this drug.

Cyclosporine increases the amount of potassium in your blood. Don’t use potassium supplements or salt substitutes when taking this drug. One study has shown that water-soluble vitamin E may be helpful for improving your absorption of cyclosporine. Discuss talking vitamin E supplements with your doctor- do not start taling them on your own.
