Cancer of the body of the uterus is most common in women around the menopause. The precise cause is unknown but it is likely to be related to hormonal change.

Some authorities have expressed cancer that the prolonged use of oral contraceptives, which maintain the lining of the uterus, the indonetrium, in a prolonged state of pseudo pregnancy, might have a delayed carcinogenic effect, but to date there is not such evidence to support such a fear.

Endometrial cancer makes its presence known by menstrual irregularity, post menopausal bleeding, and abnormally heavy menstrual periods. These warning signs appear early, and the diagnosis is easily established by diagnostic uterine curettage.

The treatment is by hysterectomy, resulting in a high rate of cure. In patients whose disease has already spread beyond the limits of surgery, about 40 percent will obtain a useful remission from appropriate hormonal treatment.
